How to make sure your new door handle and hardware fit your door.

If you need to change the door handle, either in combination with a long sign or in combination with a rose/key sign, there are some dimensions that need to fit.

In short, it’s about:

  • The door could open and close without problems.
  • If you choose a solution with a long sign, the cut-outs for the door handle and locking system must be the right distance apart.

We’ve made a short guide so you can easily see how to do it.

In the menu below you can go directly to the measurement for your installation, alternatively you can get an overview.

Overview of the installation

Here is an overview of the 2 typical installations:

  • Figure 1 on the right shows an installation with a door handle and a rose, and as can be seen there may also be a key sign. If it is similar to your installation, click here .
  • Figure 2 shows a long sign. Here you can say that the Roset and Key sign are integrated into the long sign. And, as you can see, you can also get a Long Sign without a Key Tag if, for example, you don’t need to be able to lock the door. If it is similar to your installation, click
    here.

Both installations can be used for indoor and outdoor handles.

Door handle with rose and key ring

In the old days it was a simple choice, as door handles were mainly

Door handle with long sign

Once you have chosen the door handle, decide on the “frame”. Simply put, the frame has the small round hole that connects the door handle on both sides of the door.

There are two choices; 1) The long sign you see in the photo to the right, and 2) The rosette you see in the photo below.

Both Langskilt and Roset solve the task and it is only a question of what you think fits best.

You select your “frame” in the same way as when you selected the door handle. Both Langskilt and Roset are available in many variants and many colors (metal alloys).

As a rule, however, there are many obvious choices, as several of our door handles are designed to fit with a given Long Sign or a given Rosette.

If you are in doubt about your choice, give us a call and we will guide you through it.

But what about the key? You will find it below.

Possible challenges

WITH DOOR HANDLE

There must be room for your door handle to operate freely and for the door to open and close smoothly, of course. This is determined by the size of your door handle and the distance to the sill when the door is closed.

  • Figure 1A: The door is seen from above and is here closed, where you can see door handles on both sides. As shown by the red arrow, the distance between the door handle and the frame is not very large here, and in the worst case this could mean that the door handle hits the door frame when it is opened.

If you are in this situation, we recommend that you find a door handle that fits. Alternatively, you can remove goods on the door handle or change the sill, but these are not solutions we would recommend.

  • Figure 1B: Here you see exactly the same illustration, but as shown by the green arrow, there is now space and the door can therefore open and close without problems.

The lock determines the key plate

Separate Rosette and Key Sign

It is as illustrated in the photo above where the rosette is at the top and the key plate is at the bottom. Once you have chosen rosettes, simply select the same model for the key plate so that it fits together.

Then select the function you need

For the key sign, there are 3 different combinations. You choose this when you have chosen the model:

  1. Nothing, so no opening. It is the right choice if there is no lock or if you want to hide a lock or simply because you think it fits better.
  2. With lock. Once you have selected your model, select the lock type. If in doubt, send us a photo.
  3. With knob (for example, for a toilet). If a knob is chosen, you typically have a knob on one side and a normal lock on the opposite side, alternatively a small pin so that you can get the door open in emergencies.

Long sign with integrated key sign

On long signs, the “Rosette” is always integrated (the small round hole), while the “Key sign” is free choice. In the photo to the right, you see a Long Sign without an integrated “Key Sign”.

If your long plate must have an integrated “Key plate”, you must know the lock that is in the door so that they fit together. You can find a little more details below and of course you always ask us.

Long sign with integrated key sign

It may seem complicated but is actually quite simple.

  1. Choose model of long sign.
  2. Determine the lock type (or knob) for your model.
  3. Measure the distance between the top hole and the hole for key / lock. It is typically standard, but then we avoid mistakes.

On the left you can see the measurement of the long sign Eskan.

The interesting dimension is marked with “A” and is measured in millimeters. In the illustration to the right you will find four versions.

If you need to hide old holes, the height and width of the long sign can also be interesting. If you are in doubt, just contact us.
